A grand night out

The history of a place can be seen in its buildings but what hap- pens to history if the buildings aren’t there anymore and the people that were involved are gone?

Whitehaven is a historic harbour town in West Cumbria. Known for its coal mining and harbor, the town was once one of the largest ports in the country. This led to the establishment of over 200 public houses and hotels; only 25 survive today.

This project illustrates the history of Whitehaven through the public houses and hotels with an insightful exploration of the socioeconomic situation of the town and the loss of local identity as they have closed.
